Now, let's go to our troubleshooting steps and I'll explain things that may not be easily understood. Remember, we are trying to find a solution to the problem wherein the S7 Edge is draining its battery instead of charging while plugged in.

Step 1: Verify you're using the original charger

The Galaxy S7 Edge is using an adaptive fast charger. This is the same charger that came in the box with the main unit and it must be the one that we should troubleshoot because if you're using a different charger, then that might be the reason why the device won't charge.

Aside from the charging unit, also verify you're using the original USB cable just to be sure we no issues with the accessories as we might be wasting our time trying to find the culprit when it's just right in front of us.

Step 2: Boot your phone in safe mode and see if it charges normally

Sometimes when there's a ton of apps running in the background, the battery will drain quicker than the phone can charge. Since apps are grouped into two general categories (i.e. pre-installed and third-party), we need to isolate whether the issue is caused by third-party apps or pre-installed ones.

So, boot your device in safe mode and try charging it in that state…

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the 'Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE' on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see 'Safe mode' in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Should the phone charge at a normal pace in safe mode, then our suspicion that some third-party apps are causing the problem is confirmed and you need to find those apps and make sure they're not running while charging. You may also uninstall them if the problem can't be fixed by simply disabling the culprits.

Step 3: Turn off your phone and see if it charges fine

Assuming the phone won't charge normally in safe mode, then you should try to charge the device while it's off. With nothing running in the background, the device should charge without any issues when it's powered off.

If everything works fine without power, then it might be the firmware that has some issues especially if you recently updated the device. At this point, we can say the problem is just minor and can be fixed by doing a reset.

Step 4: Delete the system cache if the problem started after an update

Firmware updates have a tendency to mess up the phone specifically its settings and functions. That's why we are always asking our readers to observe their devices for significant activities especially that those occur prior to the problem like firmware updates.

So, if your device updated its firmware recently and then this issue showed up out of nowhere, then wiping the cache partition may fix the problem:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight 'wipe cache partition.'
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option 'Yes' using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight 'Reboot system now' and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Step 5: Try doing the master reset to see if the device charges normally after that

After doing the first 4 steps and you still don't have a clue as to what the culprit really is, then it's time you did the master reset. The procedure will reset the device to its default settings, reformats both the cache and data partitions, and deletes files that may have something to do with the problem.

At the same time though, all your files and data will also be deleted. So, make sure you make a backup of all the files you don't want to lose.

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn't matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won't affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that's when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The "Installing system update" message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight 'wipe data / factory reset.'
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option 'Yes — delete all user data' using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight 'Reboot system now' and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

The reset is your last resort so if your phone is still not charging normally after this, there must be a problem with the hardware. There's the possibility that the phone suffered water and/or physical damage, the battery got damaged for some reason, the charger isn't giving out the right amount of current, the cable is causing too much resistance, etc.

At this stage, you need help from a technician who can do further tests and troubleshooting. You may send the phone in or bring it to a store where you bought it.
