With most of Samsung's devices, water resistance has never been part of the equation. As waterproofing and water resistance continue to manifest as a feature in new devices, however, Samsung has started to shift their efforts and has been producing smartphones that are water resistant to some degree. Their 'Active' line of Galaxy S devices has always been at the forefront of Samsung's water resistance efforts along with bringing a more durable and rugged design into the mix. The latest in the Active lineup, the Galaxy S7 Active, was recently launched on AT&T as of last month on June 10th, and as of a little more than a week ago, Consumer Reports put the device through its paces and subjected it to a water test that ended up yielding less than desirable results. Samsung has now officially put out a statement that responds to that particular test.
In Samsung's response, they mention that they "stand behind" the nature of the Galaxy S7 Active's IP68 certification for water resistance. Following that statement they also mention that if water damage ends up occurring on a consumer's device, they are willing to replace any Samsung Galaxy S7 Active which falls under the terms of the standard limited warranty.
While Samsung's commitment to replace the Galaxy S7 Active in light of water damage may not smooth things over for some customers or ease their weariness about the Galaxy S7 Active's ability to hold up to the elements, Samsung does state that during research and development and testing of the phone before mass production, the device was put through many rigorous tests that would ensure the IP68 certification of the device. The Galaxy S7 Active, like many phones with an IP68 certification, are supposed to be able to withstand submersion in water for usually up to 30 minutes at a depth of 5 feet. This is outlined in the manual for the phone, but Samsung also follows it with a disclaimer message which states that under no circumstances is the phone impervious to water damage. Whether or not you as an AT&T customer choose to go with the Galaxy S7 Active is ultimately up to you, but the results of this test may warrant considering the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge instead.
